Susan was joint winner of the Student Design & Build 2011 competition run by Wyevale East nurseries, the prize being a spot in the Small Gardens category at Hampton Court. The garden, Coastal Drift, was entirely designed by Susan Willmott and Adele Ford, built by Outdoor Creations, with all plants being sourced and supplied by Wyevale East Nurseries.
Susan explains that “Coastal Drift was designed to represent part of a larger garden and is an area in which to relax and unwind, allowing stress to float away. The concept was taken directly from the waves of the sea, echoed by the shape of the wall and choice of planting, with a curved feature wall planted with grasses and below the deck, swathes of grasses and perennials adding movement and colour, which harmonise with the sea theme.
Everything was chosen to reflect the growing environment six miles from the south coast of England, including plants that thrive in the summer garden and grow well in free-draining soil. Materials associated with the coast, such as sun-bleached timber, pebbles and shingle, mix with tall structural grasses and perennials, offering seed heads and flowers that benefit insects, bees and butterflies.”
Wyevale East Nurseries add “A huge well done to Susan and Adele for their well deserved Gold Medal. Gold medals are rarely achieved by newly qualified designers on their first show garden.”
