September’s a great time to take a look at the g

September’s a great time to take a look at the garden and see how it’s doing. Which bits are faring well and where might need some more support. I take photos as I often forget details by mid winter.. 🙈

I’ve been adding perennial veg and unusual edibles to my borders for a while now and particularly love this little silene vulgaris so am collecting seeds as gifts.

Its lower leaves are good in salads and its roots have medicinal properties, plus being a good pollinator plant and very sweet in the border or vase. (And there’s usually plenty for both bees and beautiful tables)

I think I bought the plants originally from @incredible_vegetables who do incredible vegetables near Totnes in Devon.

Seed saving and swapping is a profound act we can each easily take to do good and avoid our food seeds being controlled by a very few big companies. See @thegaiafoundation and @adventuresinseedandsoil if you’d like to know more on that fascinating topic. And if you’re buying seeds now, check they are organic if possible, and free from fungicide or neonic coatings for definite. @vital.seeds is a good source.. if you have favourites please share them with everyone below ⬇️🌱

Words, colours, landscapes and music… add food and friends for a perfect Bloomsbury meet up at the @gardenmuseum to see Gardening Bohemia curated by Dr Claudia Tobin, with stunning natural paint colours supplied by @edwardbulmerpaint.

I researched Edward’s paints when I was writing Sustainable Garden. We always recommend them ~ No VoCs, no plastics, just plant based pigments and incredible colours so it was great fun to meet and celebrate his gorgeous new book too - featuring some houses whose gardens I have worked in..

Plus a snippet of the Woolfs’ Wartime Music which can now be accessed by everyone, thanks to O’Neill’s ingenuity on Spotify . She has included old recordings that appeared on the 78 rpm records purchased from Monk’s House. They include music by Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, and Brahms

It was such a beautiful evening we headed to Sissi

It was such a beautiful evening we headed to Sissinghurst for a walk around the fields and woods.

So many favourite trees looking stunning in the late summer light. And the reading room reflected in the moat. A gift to Harold Nicolson it’s apparently exactly the same dimensions as Apollo 13 🚀

Delos also looking gorgeous in the evening glow. An idea sparked by Troy Scott Smith to recreate Vita and Harold’s original vision ~ it’s a beautiful and successful design by Dan Pearson. I loved the old garden that was here before ~ in its own rather overgrown way it had great charm, but I love this one perhaps more now, and it’s inspired so many people to try a Mediterranean palette and planting in gravel.

There was a couple sitting in the sun enjoying being all alone there after hours, so I tried hard not to get them in the shot!

I’m looking forward to talking at Sissinghurst on Friday September 27th. We are so lucky to have this national treasure on our doorstep.

Here’s a simple palette that looks good and is full of bird and insect life all through summer and autumn. The seed heads stay through winter and it’s full of spring bulbs and early colour too.

The studio is amongst lots of trees and shrubs planted for summer shade ~ and hedges for filtering a winter breeze..

In summer we open the windows on the shady north side to let the cool air in, and open the skylights to let the warm air out.. simple cooling currents keeping us comfortable until it’s time to party with the plants..
