A beautiful day @greatdixterofficial plant fair. Stuffed with new nurseries and established growers all bringing the best of independent horticulture, gardening and community.
And the best thing is it’s on again tomorrow..
I walked away with my first ever Coleus, a seventies throw back much admired by fellow shoppers who scurried off to see if Derry had more @specialplantsnursery. Some gorgeous melica and giant thistle from @j.bruce.garden whose stand won most exotic insect with a huge predatory wasp., found a lovely little eurybia from @hootons_walled_nursery (who as he says is not that north..) and some fab bupleurum fruticosum from Hannah @brightgreenfox nursery. Too late for @greenwichgardener ‘s earlgrey cake but I still yomped a few others mostly as an excuse to catch up with @robynreevesbmd and with @guilfoyleannie on her plans for @gardenmasterclass 10th year.. wow… then a gorgeous pootle about @greatdixtershop with @aritanderson and @craigamarkham before I had to visit my bee friends for a human-break. Glorious day indeed. Thank you @fergusmustafasabrigarrett for all that you have done for horticulture and all of us lucky hortics. What a gift.

In April 2025 Gemma was due to join @marianboswallstudio but just the week before, she was diagnosed with a large meningioma (brain tumour) which was compressing her brain stem. She underwent successful surgery in July 2025 and now she’s running a marathon! We have all been bowled over and inspired by her stoicism stamina and wonderful sense of fun. Happiest on site but also a brilliant storyteller behind the screen, we are so thrilled she chose us and can’t imagine life before she was part of our team.Through the diagnosis, treatment and recovery FORCE offered counselling and therapeutic services. They offer this to anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis and are free services which can be accessed during some of the most challenging times for patients.Gemma’s surgery was successful, with the remaining tumour stable, monitored and very slow growing. However brain tumours remain one of the most underfunded yet most often terminal cancer diagnosis for those under 40. To raise awareness of this and to celebrate her mother Sally’s 10th year as a counsellor with FORCE they have decided to run in the Amsterdam Marathon. On 18th October Gemma and Sally (mother-daughter duo) will be running the Amsterdam Marathon and half to raise money for FORCE and awareness of brain tumours in the under 40’s.
FORCE @charityforcecancer is a Devon-based charity that provides a welcoming space, advice, therapies, groups and many other services for those affected by a cancer diagnosis, and members of their families.Go Gemma and Sally! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨https://www.justgiving.com/page/two-brains-take-amsterdam-2?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL

Enroute from Yorkshire to Braemar I made a spontaneous detour to escape off grid to the magical lands of @bamffeco in Scotland. The UK’s first beaver wilding site where over more than twenty years they have woven a rich ecosystem of tiered dams, shorn up and side leated in a feat of exquisite engineering. Wild ponies, pigs and cows, red squirrels and an abundance of birds and medicinal birch polypore., a very special tour with founder Paul and then an evening by the woodburner reading (truthfully gobbling through the night) his wife @hlramsay new novel Landed ~ based in a very similar setting ;)A beautiful morning walk and then at the top of a hill I switched my phone on to check in with the world., and the matrix shifted. My elderly mother had fallen and spent that same night I read through on a roadside until she was found in the morning and hospitalised. Her main thought the worry of making a mess with all that blood on the pavement.. So a slow dash south and time now by her side in hospital as we are both transported back to Scotland by my reading Landed aloud, to her plus the odd nurse and patient coming to see what we are enjoying so much.Thank you Paul and Louise @bamffeco for moments to treasure. A deep reminder how these feed the trickier times.

How is the wheel of your year going?A few highlights from my last quarter since Summer solstice spun through Lammas and on to the Equinox today.A little more balance incoming maybe after a crazy wild ride where it is apparent that my favourite moments are mostly standing about in fields with some beautiful souls! Please take the reel template and use it to share your highlights (I’d love to see where you find joy!)Comment Wheel below if you’d like the wheel image to work on your year. The idea is to concentrate on how you actually felt at each event, beyond the photo image, and concentrate on bringing in more of the things you love in the next quarter. A simple but powerful tool.Giving huge thanks for all the wonderful beings who’ve been part of my last three months.. Happy Equinox.#equinox

Be kind whenever possible.
It is always possible~ His Holiness the Dalai LamaLooking back as we get to the Equinox to the wild and beautiful ride that has been this year so far, this serendipitous, unplanned and gifted moment has to be my deepest highlight.I’ll share the wheel of the year tomorrow if you’d like to use it to reflect on your year so far.
(It’s also in the last chapter of The Kindest Garden if you have a copy)

Because of impermanence everything is possible..Understanding impermanence gives us the courage to live our lives fully, because we know that this moment will pass, and the next moment will bring something new.~ Thich Nhat HahnEnjoying a moment in the @marianboswallstudio garden with a volunteer hollyhock feeding a resident bee. Hot sun but shade from trees on the west side and a lovely cool through draught from windows open to a north facing copse. Natural low tek air conditioning for our times. This beautiful bee may be one of the residents of my letterbox, perhaps that’s for another reel..Have a lovely week.

The path to my front door is full of visitors.Welcome though not invited, neither paid for nor place-set by me Angelica and Orlaya are two such ~ firmly rooting now through the ancient concrete of my forbears, topped only with my newcomer’s gravel and benign neglect.Bear with me if it takes a while to greet you on the drive. These influencers all have a plus one for every petal it seems. Those myriad beings buzzing about in the aisles. With exquisite details they have been dressed to share their short days on earth. How can I fail to bow.

Then there are those rare days, not entirely unknown in any region of the planet, that dawn with a clarity that muscles its way into every home and office, lending a crispness and cogency to almost every thought. One feels uncommonly good on such days, and others do, too; deliberations move forward with unaccustomed ease. Ambiguities resolve themselves—or render themselves more explicit, the choices more defined and clear-cut. There’s a delicious radiance that seems to come from the things themselves, from even the tables and the plush rug, and when we step outside we can taste it in the air and the way a few fluffed clouds rest, almost motionless, in the crystal lens of the sky. How far our vision travels on such days!~ David AbramSending love from my garden in its Mayness.

A bit about me. I was asked to talk about my journey for @deep_seed_podcast. So this takes me from mini me aged four to 1980’s full on management consultancy to founding @marianboswallstudio.. in about a minute. There are some bits missing but I hope it might help anyone else considering taking a plunge and changing to something they love. Landscape architecture was a brilliant calling for me. Perhaps you have pivoted, or would like to, too?#regenerativedesign
