Embracing Autumn and the cycle of dark and light led me to Lao Tse’s Tao Te Ching (‘The Way of Integrity’, written 400 BC) verse 50

Here are two translations:

We go from birth to death.
Three out of ten follow life.
Three out of ten follow death.
People who rush from birth to death
Are also three out of ten.
Why is that so?
Because they want to make too much of life.
 I have heard that the one who knows how to live
Can wander through the land
Without encountering the rhinoceros or the tiger.
He passes the battlefield
Without being struck by weapons.
In him, the rhinoceros finds no opening for its horn.
The tiger finds no opening for its claws.
The soldiers find no opening for their blades.
 Why is that so?
Death has no place in him.

And a fun modern translation from Jeffrey Mallinson 2021:

In the course of life and death,
three in ten focus only on getting
what they can from this life.
Three in ten focus on death
and what might be beyond it.
Three in ten try to play life safe
within in the status quo
but actually veer toward death.
Why is this? By worrying too much
about staying alive and consuming life’s treasures,
they never truly live,
yet death catches up with them.
Still, I’ve heard of rare individuals
who’ve mastered the art of living.
They travel nimbly through the world.
They eat local foods abroad.
They visit vibrant cities in developing nations.
Remarkably, these same adventurers
often carry on without getting mugged
or sick, or shaken down by border agents.
How do they pull this off?
They travel confidently and respectfully,
unafraid of death,
knowing that death can’t touch them,
since there is no way
to kill their true self.

The main point, and it’s a helpful one, is that if we stop worrying about the limits of our mortal existence, they start to feel limitless. There is a spiritual place that your enemies can’t touch. They can’t kill it, and therefore they can’t kill the true you. You are invincible in this sense. So hang 10,000 and enjoy the ride, immortal. (Jeffery Mallinson 2021)

By letting go, we can flourish.

Gardeners are generous folk and a gift from a fell

Gardeners are generous folk and a gift from a fellow gardener is something I always treasure deeply.

I first got to know Great Dixter twenty two years ago, once falling asleep by the pond after dropping little ones at school. I awoke to find myself beside a ring of Christo and friends visiting. They politely ignored me and nothing was ever mentioned!

I’ve had many gifts of knowledge and friendship since, and this year we’ve just been given a wonderful strewing of meadow hay. It smells amazing! It’s more like an heirloom than a gift even. Lovingly cultivated over years in the Dixter meadow, it will live on through the seeds it sows in mine.

Just magical.

Our annual event was a truly joyful evening. Wonderful & highly relevant talk from @marianboswall which turned into the best science lesson ever (with a hint of primary school play) - I now understand exactly why we shouldnt dig & till our soil! Thank you Marian.

It’s going to be a fabulous and potentially intense journey with @masters.nicole author of For the Love of Soil, and founder of @integrity_soils plus nineteen brilliant change makers. We start at @althorphouse generously hosted by @karenspencer and I hope you’ll join me on the journey!

The first thing you notice is the sound. A new meadow literally hums with life.

Then the movement; bees, butterflies and hoverflies, grasshoppers and beetles.. they got the memo that there was a new meadow and came in droves! It’s humbling and so very exciting at the same time.

This is the first of three huge new meadows planned here and the other two have ponds, scrapes, hedgerows, trees, chalk and some bare seed patches for turtle doves. I hope they get the memo too!

World Elephant day! When brilliant @rebeccacampbe

World Elephant day!

When brilliant @rebeccacampbellartist introduced me to @elephantfamily and the work they do pre lockdown we were keen to help, and worked with them on the original @coexistence_project plans.

When they went on hold and reemerged post lockdown under a different team we were thrilled that a favourite client spotted these on the street in London and bought some!

The campaign raised over £3m.. Made of an invasive plant called lantana 125 of them came to London and gave an insight into life in the Nilgiri hills in Southern India ~ showcasing ways in which we can learn to coexist with the more than human world.

I think this mother and babe look rather marvellous in our clients’ garden too don’t you.

Rta ~ ‘active, creative truth’, or ‘the way things truly are’.

Like Qi and the Dao, Rta is not a God but a sacred, impersonal, animating force, one of the most important concepts in the ancient Hindu texts the Vedas.

What Thomas Aquinas called ‘Being itself’, Rta is the indic root of the English words Harmony and Art.

We are all connected.

Someone told me that some women over a certain age can be invisible. I said it’s my favourite superpower ~ to choose to be invisible at dawn and ask if I might mingle with the elementals …

Such a privilege to be allowed so close to this beautiful being.
